Today’s Plantings

Pumpkin seeds and microscopic bell pepper seeds

During my lunch break today, I saw ominous rain clouds approaching for the first time in two solid months. So I figured it was a good time to get some more seeds in the ground, fast! I chose the next two packets in my pile of seeds. The third type of pumpkin and a bell pepper that is supposed to ripen into white fruit. The pumpkin seeds were fine, but those pepper seeds were small!

It was a challenge, but I got them both into the ground before any rain fell.

Microscopic tomato seeds

The rains hadn’t arrived yet, but thunder had. I like a good challenge, so went to get the next two packets in the pile. These were tomatoes. The seeds in these packets were also small. I never really looked at the seeds in tomatoes while I’m eating them, this was a wake up call. Small!

The Tomato Place

I started cursing at this point being the packet said to plant them 1/4-inch into the ground, the ground is not totally soil, it’s got a lot of lumpy rocks in it, and the seeds I could barely see. But, I did something along the lines of planting, as I poked a hole, plopped in a seed, and found some soil to pour over the indentation.

Rain by Raven

Just about then, the rains came. Woohoo! I didn’t have to water the newly planted seeds. And Raven got a good look at the first rain storm of the summer. She’s always at the front of the line.

More seeds

After work, I decided to plant two more of the remaining four packets. Lettuce and zucchini were next in the line-up. The zucchini was a fine sized seed, but I about fell over when I opened the lettuce packet and tried to find the seeds. They pretty much are the size of flea dirt, but they’re white. I have no idea where the seeds are in a head of lettuce, but at this size, I won’t hold my breath, or maybe I should. A seed this size could easily go up one’s nostril with a mere inhalation.

The Zucchini Spot

I planted the zucchini back in this little spot.

The Lettuce Place

Being I couldn’t see the microscopic lettuce seeds, I can only surmise that there are some in the dirt here.

Leissl and Ginger

Leissl and Ginger told me it was a job well done. Aren’t they the cutest smiley faces around?

Then Ginger said, “Play ball!”
So we did.

Sunny Thursday

Ginger sun bathing

Today, Ginger enjoyed a good sun bath when I came home at lunch.  She is feeling better and smiling again.

I am grateful for this.  Ginger’s one of the sugar kind of Dobies who’s so sweet she appreciates everything and thensome.

Raven’s kisser

Tonight I had the clicker out for teaching downs.  Raven’s getting along very well with “down,” and she is trying hard to understand “stay,” but that lack of doing anything but being still is a hard concept for Raven to grasp.  But she’s trying.

Of course, only Raven could jam her tooth in between my thumb and its nail hard enough to cause me pain that hasn’t stopped since.  I was giving her a treat!  I don’t think I mention enough what a babe she is.  She has brains, she just shifts from 1st to 4th without consideration to 2nd and 3rd.

Taylor is very smart, too.  So much so that when I wasn’t clicking, she grabbed the clicker, which was attached to a sliding elastic dealio on my waste band, and pulled on it for me to get busy clicking!

Smooch!

I’m beginning to wonder if I should kiss the frog on my window.  He’s faithful, I’ll give him that.  He hasn’t left my window sill since we met and he has a steady job.  Every night he’s on the window bringing home the “bacon.”

Just as important, he knows about my dogs and isn’t jealous of them.  I’ll think about it.

Ginger Tonight

Ginger is feeling better tonight.  She’s chewed on a nylon bone for a while.

Chomp…chomp…chomp.

And threw us some lovely raspberries.  Here’s one.

Pthhhhhpt!

Of course, Raven wanted the bone Ginger had.  Bones taste better when someone else has them.

Raven: “I want that.”

They taste pretty good when you get them for your own, too.

Mine at last!

P.S. Ginger gave the bone up of her own free will.

Ginger’s Lunch

I was going to drive to Costco at lunch today for one of those aromatic chickens for Ginger.  Then I wasn’t.  Then I was, wasn’t, was.  On my last was, I started getting the signals…green ones.  So I went through them, and passed my turn to go home, at which point I was on a wasn’t again, until a dove flew over head and told me to keep going, so I did.  I got the chicken and came home.  After I ate half of it, I decided to see if Ginger, who’d already gone outside and came in again, wanted some.  She was in her crate, so I offered her some to the dismay of all the other dogs.  She didn’t take it.  I told her where I’d gone for it, put several pieces on her paws, shut the door, and let her alone a while.  When I came back in, she’d eaten all the pieces!  And was waiting to come out of that room.  Then, I thought, give her more.  So I did, but that was too much.  The pile of chicken remained a pile until I went back in to pick it up.  So instead, I swabbed a finger full of peanut butter on her roof, and told her I loved her.  Then I gave her another pain pill, and came to work.

I hope she keeps up the good work.

Ginger’s Surgery

Ginger’s not feeling well since her surgery.

Ginger, not feeling too well

She had a very hard surgery.  The lump was so big, there wasn’t much skin to close her wound, but the vet managed.  This is Ginger when I picked her up.  She was still groggy.

Ginger right out of the recovery room

Her new x-ray shows the cancer has grown in her lungs and in other spots.

Ginger’s X-ray

Ginger slept all the way home.  Her eyes could barely open the few times she tried.

She slept all the way home, and into the next day.

She’s not eating now, though she is drinking.  I gave her a small amount of vanilla yogurt with two 35 cc syringes today and this evening, she got a swab of peanut butter on the roof of her mouth.  She will come outside to go potty and be social with me.  That is what drives her – getting loving from her person.  She’s a wonderful Dobie.
