Leissl

The First Day of Christmas

On the first day of Christmas, DoberDiva Leissl wore a red, red wreath.

I look ravishing!

And pulled it off spectacularly! How many of us could look this stunning with a red, red wreath on our heads?

She had a few other beautiful photos from another photo shoot she wants to share. She’s such a German Babe, Leissl is.

Ja! Ja! Ja!

Here she is being a softer German Babe.

A softer Leissl

Raven! What are you doing here?!

This is the best I could do being I’m still a puppy.

Didn’t you say, “Sit, Raven, sit?”

The DoberSit - Raven’s already keen to it.

If she said that, you are supposed to sit like this, puppy brains!

I don’t think she said that.

December 1st in Fort Doberdale

Here we are ending the first day of the last month of 2007. Wow. It was a busy day at Fort Doberdale.

Today Ollie turned 7 years old. Happy birthday, Oliver!

Today is Ollie’s birthday!

Here’s a lovely hibiscus flower that bloomed just for Ollie’s birthday.

Lovely lilac colored hibiscus.

In other news, someone changed our daily incoming mail routine. Normally, the mail pops out of our front door like toast, onto our floor, and sits there until I pick it up. But today’s mail moved from inside the house to the back yard, where the rubberband had been removed, and the mail had been scattered. And as Ginger walked up to the pile, I noticed a small band hanging from her mouth.

Ginger’s adventure.

Ginger was hesitant to share her find with me. Opting, instead, for the infamous “let me see if I can swallow the thing before I get to my mom” move.

I can’t seem to swallow this thing.

She couldn’t swallow it that fast, so we had a bit of a tug-o-war, which is rather unlike Ginger, who is usually more cooperative. Perhaps she has “stepping out of her comfort zone” goals, too!

Gimme that, Ginger!

A Mockingbird watched the goings-on…

…until I won and had the rubber band in my possession. Then he flew the coop, and Ginger confessed to what was obvious.

Yes, I did it. But I wanted that rubber band!

She has promised me that was the last of her maildog endeavors. Not that I distrust the girl, but next time that mail comes popping through the door and I’m not home, I’m not sure if she can hold true to her promise. So I have to remember to put an ex-pen around the door when I leave. Staying one-step ahead of the FDSP is one of my daily challenges.

Meanwhile, one weekend, back in July or August, I had intended on teaching Luna to sit on command. That didn’t pan out. Luna is one of the most observant Doberdoggies I have met. She watches everything, as if she is planning on doing it next. My first attempt at teaching her to sit wasn’t as successful as today’s. Today, I took her out amongst the crowd with clicker and treats, and did exactly the same thing with her as I had on that summer evening in a private lesson, but instead of being wary of the whole adventure, today, Luna did magnificently well vying for the click-and-treat with all her buddies. Anyone who knew how to sit, did so, and in no time, Luna was sitting along with the crowd, getting her own clicks-and-treats.

Luna sit! “OK.”

Luigi was particularly eager to help out. He is fond of Luna Kahuna, and moreso of treats.

Luigi demonstrates how to get a treat.

Leissl was another big-time teacher today. She can sit and lie down push-up style.

Leissl such a big help, too.

Raven also had a milestone today. She learned the beginnings of “down” on command. Unlike Luna, Raven has to do her learning without distraction. She did very well in the bedroom with the down command. She was a brainiac. But amongst the crowd, where the picture taking took place, there were too many other things to do. Like shove her toys at me. But, she is slowly piecing things together, and that’s all I ask.

Raven ponders what this finger on the ground thing is all about.

Finally, Baby and I spent alone time to figure out if she is going to compete anytime soon to get her Companion Dog title. We are still figuring that out, but the best part of working, for any Doberdog, is the playing afterwards. And Baby is no exception. She loves her Frisbee, and that’s how we ended the sunshine portion of our December 1st in Fort Doberdale.

I love a game of Frisbee!

Peppermint Leissl

Watch out Peppermint Patty. You have competition!

Luna sniffs Peppermint Leissl’s breath.

Peppermint Leissl, known as Leissl to her friends, is a sweet smiling lover girl. She was recently voted the kissiest Dobergirl in all of Fort Doberdale.

Leissl is the sweetest Peppermint Girl around!

Dobergramps Regis

Regis is the resident Dobergramps at Fort Doberdale. He was adopted within a few weeks of Ginger at the end of 2005. He has wobbly back legs, and had probably been in an accident of some sort years ago because he has some scars on his back legs where hair will not dare grow in.

Regis is a big boy, and like a lot of seniors of all species, a lot of his parts sag. He has the best neck. I love to hold it and watch it wobble. His underbelly, now that it has something in it to sag, does a nice wobble as well. He came to Fort Doberdale a little undernurished and very depressed. Another old dog left to die at a shelter.

I would guess Regis was a studly boy, as he was not neutered until I adopted him, and he was no spring chickie then…er rooster, I mean. But he likes his girls, and it has taken him a while to realize he’s not the macho guy he once was. He loves to boss Bouchard around, and Bouchard is a little scared of Regis, which isn’t a bad thing really. Bouchard needed a little bit to be put in a place where he could revere an elder male. And he does.

Regis favorite thing to do is get out the back door first, turn around, and bully Bouchard until I come along to break it up so Bouch can get outside. Regis moves like a rusty old tank, and Bouchard moves like a Doberduck. Unfortunately Bouchard’s time of malnourishment was in his formative months, so he had nothing to build his bones and muscles till after they were put in place and lacking.

Regis barks in Bouchard’s ear when the Fort Doberdale Squirrel Posse is tracking the progress of the local squirrel patriach, Clem, or one of his relatives. He also barks in his ear when he finds it necessary. Regis reminds me of a drill sergeant, and Bouchard is the frustrated boot camp soldier.

When I throw the ball for the Posse, Regis gets riled up to the point that he has jumped up at me if I’m on a chair, and grabbed at the ball. He can’t run after the ball, and he wants his turn to hold onto it so everyone can honor him as the ball keepper.

Today was one of those times. I gave him the ball, and with the exception of one finger, the pass off went fairly painlessly. Regis was the honorable Cuz Ball Mann, aka, “The Mann,” and had his time in the sun where the other players tried to figure out how to get the ball back into circulation.

You may notice another Cuz ball in this picture. There may be a half dozen other Cuz balls, but once one Cuz ball is nominated as “the ball,” the other ones don’t count if you’re a player in the big game.

Regis with the Cuz Ball

While the other big game players figured out how they were going to retrieve the ball from the Dobergramps, Regis tore into the grass, ripping it out like Macho Mann, and showing his might.

Sometimes, Regis has senior moments and trips over things…like the hose or the threshhold. And other times he gets a look on his face as if he is trying to remember what he was doing. Like today when he was guarding the Cuz Ball, that look suddenly came over his face.

I’m thinking

That’s when the others know they can safely get the Cuz Ball back…because he forgot he was guarding it.

Time’s up, Leissl says.

By the time he realizes what’s going on, it’s time to start the game over again.

Please throw this ball!

By the way, November is Adopt-A-Senior Month. Seniors are often overlooked, but, with their antics, love of life, and calm natures, are a wonderful addition to a household. They appreciate having a warm hearted person to love and a soft place to rest their old bones. Check our seniors page out for some very lovely adoptable characters looking for love and stability in their golden years.
